Starting PrEP requires baseline bloodwork including HIV testing, kidney function, and STI screening. Quarterly follow-ups track ongoing safety and effectiveness.

Another misconception: PrEP is expensive. Under most Medicaid managed care plans in New York, PrEP visits and medication cost zero dollars. For uninsured patients, manufacturer assistance programs often cover the full cost. No referral is required to start the conversation.

What is PrEP and who should consider it?

PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) is a daily medication that is over 99 percent effective at preventing HIV when taken as prescribed. It is recommended for anyone who is HIV-negative and at increased risk, including people with an HIV-positive partner, those who do not consistently use condoms, people who inject drugs, or anyone who has had a recent sexually transmitted infection.

Is PrEP covered by my insurance?

Yes. Under the Affordable Care Act, most insurance plans must cover PrEP with zero copay, including the medication and all required lab work and office visits. New York Medicaid and most Marketplace plans cover PrEP fully. If you are uninsured, we can help you access PrEP through patient assistance programs at no cost.

What lab work is required for PrEP?

Before starting PrEP, you will need an HIV test, kidney function test, hepatitis B screening, and STI screening. Once on PrEP, follow-up labs are required every 3 months including an HIV test and STI screening, and kidney function tests every 6 months. These visits also serve as a regular check-in with your provider.

Is PrEP confidential?

Absolutely. All PrEP-related visits, testing, and prescriptions are fully confidential and protected by HIPAA. Your provider will not share your PrEP status with anyone without your written consent. We provide a judgment-free, affirming environment for all patients.
